THE PERSON
Miriam Mutton
Raised in Cobourg, I have family here and I live in the George Street Heritage District of Cobourg. I have been a Cobourg businesswoman and community advocate for more than 36 years. Learning is a lifelong pursuit, and in 2015 I completed graduate studies in Sustainability Studies at Trent University. As a landscape architect in private practice 1989 - 2025, a garden design specialist, I continue to research and promote solutions in tune with both built and natural environments.
Since my teenage years, I have cared about and have been deeply involved in this community’s quality of life. I have received volunteer service awards from the Town of Cobourg and the Province of Ontario. For almost eleven years I was a mentor to a young person as a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northumberland. And, I have held leadership roles including serving as President of the Victoria Hall Volunteers and President of the Northumberland Land Trust Board of Directors.
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES
As a Councillor
Fundamental principles guiding my role in local government are accountability, accessibility and advocacy.
I have been described as a systems thinker in my approach to problem-solving and understanding issues. As Councillor, I will facilitate dialogue towards informed decision-making based upon a solid understanding of the options and possible outcomes.
What does this mean in the role as Councillor?
To me, it means timely and transparent public consultation with the citizens of Cobourg is important in order to determine community priorities and to discuss the best ways to achieve results.
